Discussion:
registration codes for old Newton software

I've got a bunch of old Newton software from companies that don't
exist. But some of them require registration codes. Any ideas on what
I can do? I read online that there is a file called newtonhacks.sit
but haven't had any luck finding it. Also, a bit concerned that it's
an illegal list of codes for companies still in business.

Help? Thanks!

Anti-piracy and copyright laws would probably make that a really bad idea.

What you need is a soup editor like SoupKitchen or SBM Utilities.

Open the System soup and search for the entry of QuickPress: 'tag:

and change the slot 'isreg from "Nil" to "True" . That's it...

Some on that list are still commercial, so I was merely advising

are any of these abanonware? i looked throught e archive to see if
newthack was and the answer was that the author hadnt replied to anyone
since 200 and that one of his friends was in the porcess of asking him
(and apparently still is). also, i cn only find v1.1, which that code
wont work for. i havent looked for the others yet.
im all for using cracks for abandonware and occasionaly when a feature
you want to try is disabled in demo mode, but since i am learning to
program i dont want to be the same kind of person that would steal from
me.

Since Boxer is from SAS and they're still in business and haven't abandoned
the Newton it's definitely not abandonware.
IIRC most of the serials on that list are very old anyway and won't work
with OS 2.1

and after Apple, Philz' and Thomas extensions, it shows that one can
very easily add interfaces Dock can work on.
So there is no need to write a system patch for that purpose.

How about writing a system patch that would contain those extensions? Then,
whenever you do a hard reset, you wouldn't have to reload those extensions.

Personally I think the above would be a waste of time.

I have been using my MP2000/2100 for years(3?) and have never needed to
do a hard reset. With the infrequency of this operation, what is the
big deal about reloading a few goodies?

Paul has plenty of other pots boiling, and I think it's more beneficial
to let him work on those....

If you never did a hard reset, then I would guess that you have a lot of
space in the internal memory that is wasted. Whenever I do a hard reset, I
can usually recover 200-300KB alone.

Then, if you have a problem, like I did Friday, and you need to reload your
Ethernet drivers and such, you have to dig to find your dongle, then setup
AppleTalk and try to have at least the minimum loaded. I mean, if it was
possible to have a few minimum packages in a system patch, then I think it
would be more convenient. Plus, since Paul has already did a system patch,
it's not like he's starting from scratch...

Well.
First, I never extended the size of the system patch. I killed two
Newtons when I last tried it.

Second, all these extensions are pretty big. I could reduce the
TCP/IP dock extension's size, but you need NIE and Ethernet card
drivers. In fact, the smallest subset would be Lantern (Newton
Devices) and the card drivers.

NewtonDevices itself is 84 KB. So it means at least 84 KB less of
RAM. Not sure everyone will want this.

For some time, there was no way to register Iambic apps and, due to their
protection scheme, even a serial # that you received from them would not
work a second time for paid users. so paid users who needed to reinstall
were SOL and many people were unhappy.

Thus after a year some info on how to hack their apps showed up; however a
rep. from Iambic is again taking Newton registrations and more than a few
people have posted that they are again happy; so there's no justifiable
reason to be hacking their stuff anymore.

I had this problem with my copy of Tactile's NewtFTP (after a hard reset
and reinstalling NewtFTP it somehow decided my reg code was no longer valid)
and Anthony Velasco had it fixed for me literally within hours.

"career intensities". Since the March archives aren't posted yet, I haven't
been able to track this thread too well. Please contact me offline at the
